Climate change has a significant impact on weather patterns around the world. One of the most obvious impacts of climate change is the increase in the frequency and intensity of floods. This phenomenon occurs due to a combination of several interrelated factors, including increasing atmospheric temperatures, changes in rainfall patterns, and melting of polar ice. Rising global temperatures lead to increased evaporation, which contributes to increased atmospheric humidity. As a result, rain becomes more intense and unpredictable. A study conducted by the IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) shows that regions with increased rainfall may experience more frequent extreme rainfall. This has implications for areas that were not previously identified as flood-prone areas. In addition, changes in rainfall patterns not only cause heavy rain in a short period of time, but also change the distribution of rain throughout the year. In some areas, periods of drought may increase, followed by extreme rainfall. Both have the potential to trigger flash floods, which can destroy local infrastructure and ecosystems. Melting polar ice also contributes to rising sea levels. As sea levels rise, coastal areas become more vulnerable to flooding. Coastal communities, which often depend on agriculture and fishing, face major threats from seawater intrusion which can damage agricultural land and reduce water quality. Another factor of concern is urbanization. The rapid growth of cities without proper planning exacerbates the impact of flooding. Soil that previously could absorb rainwater is now covered by concrete and asphalt, creating faster water runoff into rivers and waterways. Inadequate drainage systems often cannot cope with sudden rainfall, increasing the risk of flooding in urban areas. The socio-economic impact of flooding is enormous. Flooding can cause significant material loss, affect local economies, and displace communities. Apart from financial losses, there are also health impacts, such as increased risk of disease due to polluted water and disruption to health services. To overcome this challenge, continuous adaptation and mitigation is needed. Strengthening drainage infrastructure, ecosystem restoration and public education are important elements in reducing flood risk. Monitoring and planning based on weather data must also be optimized to increase community resilience to the impacts of climate change. By understanding and mitigating the impact of climate change on global flood frequency, we can take proactive steps to protect society, the economy and the environment. Collaborative efforts between government, society and non-governmental organizations are key to ensuring sustainability in this era of climate change.
